Charlestown portrays the memories and flavour of the Old South, full of historic homes, horsedrawn carriages and beautiful gardens. At Fort Sumter on April 12th 1801 troops opened fire on Charlestown which in turn started the Civil War.

We pass the restored 18th and 19th century houses as our guide relates the 300 year history which makes this town so famous.Ashley River Kayaking: From the Middleton Inn we begin our river adventure along the Ashley River. As you paddle along, expect to see herons, egrets, fiddler crabs and the legendary Bald Eagles.
