Captain Cook first sighted this fjord in March 1770 and named it Dusky Sound because he thought it had a sombre aspect. He returned to the fjord again in 1773 when he set about exploring and charting the fjord. Cook found an abundance of wildlife and flora and fauna and he set about building an observatory. This area of outstanding beauty is actually New Zealand’s largest fjord and offers many opportunities to see the amazing wildlife which live at Dusky Sound.
