White Island also known as Whakaari is New Zealand’s only active marine volcano and is situated of the east coast of North Island. White Island is two thirds below sea level and is up to 200,000 years old. Out of the three craters only on is now active, whilst the other two are long extinct. The best way to see the island is by charter boat that has been pre-arranged, as White Island is privately owned and declared a private scenic reserve.
