Situated in the Berring Sea Komandorsky is unusual in that it is a treeless island but it is also an important ecological area. Kormandorsky Nature Reserve was created in 1993 to protect all of the diverse ecosystems and marine waters surrounding the Berring Sea and the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. This nature reserve is home to over a million sea birds, Northern Fur seals, sea lions, common and spotted seals, sea otters and 21 species of whales.
