Murmansk translated from the Sami word means ‘The Edge of the Earth’ and is the largest town north of the Arctic Circle. Before the First World War, Murmansk was a small fishing village, but was soon catapulted onto the world stage when it became a base for the French, British and American expeditionary forces.
Highlights of Murmansk: On this tour we visit the Palace of Culture, the Monument of the Defenders and the Allied Cemetery and through the town we see all of the most significant monuments including the Monument to the Anti-Hitler Coalition (a hand holding the world). We then visit the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas before we head to the valley of the Vyut, then on to the Museum of Regional Studies where there are exhibits of the Tundra Zone.
