Cruises to Stronsay, Scotland, United Kingdom

Port description

Stronsay is one of a group of islands that make up the Orkney Islands. It is about seven miles long by six miles wide and is deeply cut by some large bays that give it an "all arms and legs" appearance. It is a fertile, low lying island with the highest hills being no more than 250 ft. There are few trees on the island, mostly growing in the shelter of gardens. The main sources of employment are in agriculture and fishing. The largest single employer is probably the school. Much of the employment on Stronsay is part-time and many island residents have more than one job ie. home-help, craft work, tourism etc. Additional employment has been created recently with the building of the monastery on Papa Stronsay. Most of Stronsay is rich farming land with excellent grazing, so it is mainly beef farming with some sheep. There are some fields set aside for barley etc. but this is mainly produced for animal feed.
