Hakodate’s claim to fame is that it was the first Japanese port to be opened to international trade. The city is dominated by Mount Hakodate, a totally forested mountain which can be reached by hiking or more sedately by cable car. At night time the view from the top of Mount Hakodate is one the most photographed in Japan.
Hakodate Highlights: Expect to see an array of colonial architecture including the Goryokaku, one of Japan’s first western style fortifications built in 1864 for the protection of Hakodate. All that remains are the outer walls whilst the centre is now a park open to the public. You can also see and visit the Trappist convent founded by eight Catholic French sisters in 1898 and still managed by the Trappist order. The Morning Market and Hakodateyama Hill by Ropeway: With over 400 stalls, the Morning Market sells everything from fresh seafood to trinkets. A must try is the morning cafes and restaurants which serve the most marvellous fresh fish. You and also take the cable car to the top of Mount Hakodate and view the natural harbour and surrounding areas.
