Hiroshima is infamous for being the first city that was devastated by an atomic bomb. Further on from that tragic day, Hiroshima is completely rebuilt and is a thriving cosmopolitan city set on a natural harbour which makes it important as an international trading port.
Hiroshima and Peace Memorial: We begin our tour with a visit to the Peace Memorial Park, which was built to represent the city’s wish for everlasting peace and to remember those who perished. The Cenotaph is a constant reminder of the need for peace throughout the world and those who died are remembered with their names engraved on the Cenotaph. At the base of the Cenotaph is the eternal flame which will only be extinguished when the last nuclear weapon on the planet is destroyed. We then visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum which tells the story of the bomb and the destruction it brought to Hiroshima and its people. Sights of Miyajima: We drive north to catch a ferry which takes us to Miyajima Island which is one of Japan’s most photographed attractions. Here we can see the ‘Torii Gate’ which dates back to the 6th century and was built as a holy shrine. This much loved symbol of Japan was once only approachable by boat and at high tide gave the impression that it was floating on the sea.
