Nagasaki was once a secluded fishing harbour until it was discovered by European explorers in the mid 16th century. Situated on the island of Kyushu, Nagasaki lies on a long bay which forms a natural harbour. Nagasaki was also the city where the atomic bomb was dropped during the Second World War.
Nagasaki Highlights and the Peace Park: We drive across the Glover Park and mansions which were once owned by 19th century westerners and has been associated with Puccini’s ‘Madam Butterfly’. We then journey on to the Nagasaki Peace Park, which is the exact spot of the atomic bomb explosion on August 9th 1945. We also see the bronze peace statue which stands 27 feet high. Unzen and Shimabara: Unzen Hell is an area of over thirty sulphur pits and natural steam vents which lie close to the volcanic Unzen Mountain.
