Esmeraldas is well known as being a major tobacco, cacao and gold mining province. Also Esmeraldas has some wonderful beaches and an Ecological Reserve to the north. On the northernmost coast you will find estuaries and tropical mangrove forests, whilst the inland parts of the island are only accessible by canoe.
