Leixoes is a man-made port which serves Oporto. It has a sandbar which prevents ships from docking. This is a good base from which to travel inland to historic Braga, the religious capital of Portugal. Also try to visit Guimeres, the ancient capital of Portugal and the birthplace of the country’s first king.
