The town of Livorno overlooks the Bay of Barati and is home to many priceless archaeological sites and over 22km of sandy beaches.
Florence and the Accademia: We begin our grand tour at the famous Galleria dell’Accademia which houses the world acclaimed Michangelo’s David. We then proceed to the huge cathedral of St Mary of the Flowers, decorated in multicoloured Tuscan marble. Inside we can see the ‘Gate of Paradise’, commissioned in1401 and the bell tower designed by Giotto in 1334. We then proceed to the centre of the city where the City Hall (Palazzo Vecchio) is situated and from here we cross the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), built in 1345 and the only bridge in Florence not to be blown up in World War II.The Glory of Pisa: On our guided tour we get to see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and the cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assinta and designed to represent the different cultures and influences of the time. From here we head to the Palazzo dei Cavalieri which is home to the prestigious University of Pisa. On the opposite side of the square is the notorious medieval Town Jail which saw the Major of Asa, Count Ugolino and his grandsons walled up for treachery within the jail walls. As a point of history, the whole of the Ugolino male family was executed.
