Portovenere is situated on the southern border of Liguria, and is a large bay with connections to the ports, Byron and Shelley (it was Byron who supposedly swam across this stretch of water). You can take a ferry across the channel to Palmaria, or visit Lerici and it large castle where the poet Shelley lived with his wife Mary. It is said that it was the influence of the castle that gave Mary Shelley the idea for her famous novel Frankenstein.
