Holy Loch is a mile wide and up to three miles long and it is presumed that it acquired its name for religious reasons, although through the ages many suggestions why it has such an auspicious name have been put forward. One of these was that soil from the Holy Land which was intended for the building of Glasgow cathedral, was lost to the depths of the loch when the cargo ship carrying its precious load was wrecked in the loch. This is probably highly unlikely as Glasgow cathedral was built in the 12th century. Today Holy Loch remains famous for being mentioned in the film ‘Ice Station Zebra’ and in the novel by Tom Clancy ‘Red Storm Rising’.
