Iona is a small island in the Inner Hebrides off the western coast of Scotland and holds a wealth of historical and archaeological information which gives us an idea of how life was on Iona. Of great importance to the island is the Iona Abbey which is the best preserved ecclesiastical building, dating back to the Middle Ages in the Western Isles. In front of the Abbey stands St. Martin’s Cross dating back to the 9th century and is one of the best preserved Celtic crosses in the British Isles. The graveyard is also home to many notable burials including 48 Scottish, 8 Norwegian and 4 Irish kings including the well-known king of Scotland, Macbeth.
