Situated on the Costa Blanca, Alicante was formerly known as a package holiday destination but has recently undergone a transformation. It has now recreated itself as a cultural and recreational centre, and rightfully so, as it is home to the Castillo de Santa Barbara, one of Europe’s largest surviving medieval fortresses. This magnificent fortress perches on the top of the 166 metre high Benacantil Mountain, carved from pale coloured stone. Alicante’s countryside is also stunning with mountains, forests and a superb coastline.
