St. George Island one of the main islands of Bermuda and lies to the northeast of the group of Islands. Bermuda is located off the east coast of America in the North Atlantic Ocean and is a territory of the UK. Bermuda is made up of 181 islands, the largest of which is known as the Main Island, St. George’s Island however, was the first to be colonised giving it a rich and interesting history. Bridges and a causeway via St. David’s island now join the two islands, making it easy to island hop and explore more of Bermuda,
Bermuda is famous for its beautiful pink sand beaches and clear blue seas. On a cruise deal to St George’s Island you will have plenty of choice of beaches to visit. Tobacco Bay is a shallow, warm water beach, which is extremely popular thanks to its proximity to the main town of St. George. Achilles Bay and St. Catherine’s Bay are also very close to the main town and are equally as picturesque. There are many amazing reefs nearby which you can explore by scuba diving and snorkeling.
If you ever want a break from the beautiful beaches there is plenty to do in the main town of St. George. Wander the narrow lanes where you can take in the historic surroundings and beautiful architecture. Bermuda’s World Heritage Center is a great place to visit where you can learn more about the history and culture of the area. It is very easy to walk to Ordnance Island, a tiny island only 9 metres off shore, where you will find two monuments that are very important to the island signifying the birth of the British colony in Bermuda. You will also find an amazing full size replica of the ship Deliverance.
You will find a huge variety of cuisine available in Bermuda, from traditional British Pub fare to shark hash. St George has a wide variety of restaurants for every palette and budget. There are many Bermudian dishes that are worth a try, Hoppin’ John is a staple and is boiled rice and black-eyed peas, and a traditional Sunday breakfast is salted codfish, boiled with potatoes. Other local delicacies are Bay Grape Jelly, Bermuda Bananas – a smaller and sweeter variety of banana - and fish chowder flavoured with rum. The most popular drinks are rum-based cocktails, which you will find throughout Bermuda.
St George’s Island was the first part of Bermuda to be colonized and is therefore rich in history and culture. It is home to many of the territory’s oldest buildings including St. Peter’s Church, the State House and many forts.
