Hellesylt has the perfect setting overlooking the beautiful Hellesylt waterfall with sheer cliff sides and near to Europe’s deepest lake, which is nearly 2,000 ft deep. This tiny ferry port really does offer Norway’s most spectacular scenery.
Hellesylt to Geiranger: Upon arrival you will tender ashore and join the bus. Depart Hellesylt for your overland tour, beginning with a drive past the mighty waterfall. Henrik Ibsen was inspired here to write his drama 'Brand'. Follow the climbing road through farmlands - typical for Western Norway and in between, towering mountains and mountain lakes. Continue your drive for the next 45 minutes and arrive at Lake Hornindalsvatn, which with a depth of 1,800 feet, is the deepest lake in Europe. Proceed along the lovely Nordfjord passing by the Stryn river, popular with salmon fishermen, and small quaint villages. Luncheon has been arranged at one of the hotels in Hjelledalen. After lunch, the drive will be resumed and you will head further into the mountains, passing the Tystigen Glacier. In this area you will see summer ski school in session. Your next destination is Mt. Dalsnibba, 1 mile above sea level, known for spectacular views of snow covered mountains, glaciers, lakes, and maybe even a glimpse of the Geirangerfjord far below. From Mt. Dalsnibba you will descend, stopping briefly at a viewpoint for stunning vistas of the Flydal Valley and the ship anchored in Geirangerfjord. The last stretch of road takes you through many hairpin turns before reaching charming Geiranger village, where the ship's tenders will return you to the ship.
