Cruises to Skagway, Alaska, USA

Port description

Skagway is located in a narrow glaciated valley in the most northern fjord on the Inside Passage along the south coast of Alaska. It is in the ‘Alaska Panhandle’, 80 air miles northwest of Juneau, Alaska’s capital city and 110 road miles from Whitehorse. Although Alaska is home to lots of ice and snow, summer warms up nicely and summer temperatures can reach into the high 70s. The area around present day Skagway was occupied by Tlingit people from prehistoric times. They fished and hunted in the waters and forests of the area and had become successful by trading with other groups of people on the coast. The ‘Klondike gold rush’ in 1896 changed everything. Ships brought thousands of hopeful miners to the port, to take the 500 mile journey to the gold fields in Canada. Within weeks, stores, saloons and offices were set up along the route to supply miners with goods and services, making Skagway the largest city in Alaska, and the Skagway we know today. A cruise deal to Skagway will give you the opportunity to view this amazing place.
