Recife is a fascinating port with lots of interesting things to see and do. The Pernambuca Culture Centre was once the cells of the old prison. Now you can buy an array of interesting objects from the local craft markets which are also based in the cells. Also visit Republic Square, home to the Palace of the Governors with its iron bridges which span the Capibaribe River.
