For a vessel that entered service in June 2004, this ship does not look like a year older. Everything is in pristine condition, areas are very well-maintained. Its design is extremely sleek, decorations contemporary, yet sophisticated. The ship is absolutely massive but the "centrum" at the heart of the ship makes it impossible for you to get lost as it will serve as your point of reference. Be warned that to be on a diet whilst on board is next to impossible (and personally, not sensible) considering the variety of food that they have to offer; from scrumptious meals to delectable cakes and puddings. I also think that their thirst-quenching supply of traditional lemonade is worth a special mention. A selection of ice cream is also available. I find it imperative to bring up that all these are included in the price. Apart from the elegant main dining room, there are alternative dining venues, some with a small cover charge, if you fancy a change in menu or ambiance. There are plenty of bars to choose from to suit your mood and alcoholic requirements. Worry not about those extra calories intake as there is a fully-equipped fitness centre to burn them all off (this is optional, of course). A health and beauty spa is available for those who want pampering and relaxation. Entertainment is abundant for all ages, stretching from West End-style production to fully supervised programmes for children (you can still afford to have a romantic dinner even if you are travelling with your kiddiewinks). Service is abolutely flawless. There is also a bar for all of you sports aficionados. Do not let a silly match (yes, I dare to call them silly) stop you from boarding as this will also be available to view on a large plasma screen (again, it works the same way as the ones you have at home, the referee cannot hear you!). Another proof that RCI thinks outside the box is the "gyro table". This is a revolutionary pool table that adjusts at the speed of light to offset any ship motion and maintain a stable playing surface. I must admit, I am a fan. All in all, there is something for everybody. The innovation is unparalleled which I think is a major criterion in choosing which cruise line to go with. Without a doubt, Royal Caribbean delivers in style.
I was recently invited to see Royal Caribbeans Jewel of the Seas whilst it was docked in Southampton. The Jewel is one of the Radiance Class ships so it really is quite a stunning, and it became apparent why they describe these ships as being "yacht style". At 90, 000 tons I found it to be a really nice sized ship, which whilst being large, it still felt intimate, with many different areas to suit all guests. The 9 deck Centrum is at the heart of the ship, it is a beautiful, modern area with fantastic views out to sea. Interestingly, the Jewel has been designed in a way that almost anywhere you go, you end up in the Centrum, which is a really nice feature on such a large ship. If you are lucky enough to go on this ship, head up to the Crown and Anchor lounge where, if you are brave enough, (I wasn't!) you can stand on clear glass 12 decks up and look down on the Centrum! The cabins onboard are spacious and tastefully decorated, which seems to come as standard with Royal Caribbean. This ship caters well for children. It has 3 kids clubs to suit the very young to early teens, a pool area which features a water slide, basketball court, golfing facilities as well as their trademark rock climbing wall. They even have self leveling pool tables which was pretty impressive! As for the adults, there is the spa, it really is a beautiful area, again, all glass fronted. A room I really liked was a heated room filled with lavender oils where you can just lie back and enjoy the views! The solarium is an exotic pool area with a retractable roof, perfect for enjoying the sun. Other features onboard include the theatre, a cinema, a sports bar and a lounge area with a safari theme. The main dining area onboard was really beautiful, it looked very glamourous, with chandeliers, again, I found it to be very tasteful. The food was delicious! And the waiters were excellent and entertaining at the same time! There are alternative dining rooms onboard which also looked to be good, including Portofino, the Italian restaurant and Chops Grille which we were told does the best steaks you will ever have! There is also a buffet option which i would definatley consider, there are so many options and the food looked fresh and well presented. Finaly, we were taken right up to deck 13 where all the fun really is! The Vortex is a nightclub with a revolving bar! Which I imagine would be very entertaining after having a few drinks! This is just one of many bars onboard. I would definatley consider the Jewel as a cruise option myself, it tends to do baltic cruises in the summer time and I can't imagine a better ship to take you through the Fjords on due to the amazing panaramic views you can get onboard.
