This was our first transatlantic crossing and i felt a little anxious that we would not have enopugh to keep occupied whilst at sea for so long! Check in and embarkation were both stress free though we got a little lost finding our cabin. We had a restricted view so could see only lifeboat as we looked out but to be honest it wasn't much of a bother. We only used the b The cabin was both roomy and well appointed. The bathroom, though small, was well equipped. The TV offered the usual - CNN, BBC, movies etc but reception in mid-Atlantic was spotty. This was a much different crowd than we had sailed with before. There were hardly any children, though QM2 had programs for both younger kids and teens. I

I have always said that the only way to reach New York is by ocean liner and last year I finally got the chance to do it. It has been a life long ambition to do this trip and I have got to say that it certainly didn't disapoint. We had booked a balcony cabin, one of the ones on deck 5, which they call "In the Hull". Yes it was in the hull but the balcony was absolutely enormous, much bigger than on other ships that I have sailed on. It was just a bit more sheltered which to be fair was quite nice on the windy day at sea. Our cabin steward was fantastic, I'm sure they are descendants of gnomes! They seem to know when you are out and you never (even if you try really hard) catch them in your cabin! Boarding in Southampton was a breeze and we walked straight onto the ship after clearing security. There were porters there to meet us and take us, and our hand luggage, to the cabin. This ship is so vast it takes you a few days to orientate yourself, but don't be put off by this. The QM2 seems to absorb people and you will always be able to find a quiet spot to relax, snooze, read, etc, etc. We went to the Planetarium at least 4 times, so as to see all of the different shows, you could just as well have been in London, it's fantastic, what a great idea. This area also is used as a smaller theatre and we went to a couple of classical concerts and lectures. (P D James was on board on our crossing) The food was amazing, wherever you chose to ate, although my favourite was "Todd English", which carries a small cover charge, but I tell you it's worth every last cent. The service was impeccable and the food, well frankly astonishing! We also had some great pub lunches in the "Golden Lion" the barmen and waiters are brilliant in here, it's also a very lively spot in the evenings before and after dinner. The entertainment in the evenings was of an extremely high standard and drew a full audience at every performance. My favourite was "Apassionata" a mixture of different dance styles and singing, a really magical show. We reached New York in the very early hours of the morning and raced out on deck to watch this mighty ship squeeze underneath the Verrazano-Narrows bridge, what a sight it must have been to the traffic passing overhead, even at 5am. We passed the majestic "Statue of Liberty", still lit up in the darkness, and then the emotion kicks in. We reached the pier in Manhatten just as the sun was rising, as you can imagine this was a really special moment. There really is something magical about sailing up the Hudson River to New York. If you have the chance, jump at it. Whatever the cruise this ship is fantastic, a knock out, worth every penny, I could go on and on. Like I said. "If you have the chance...........!!!"

QM2, luxury at sea! Lovely interior, looks like a liner (albeit for the funnel). Food was a little bit disspointing and the service could be a bit better. Overall though V. Good. Great receptions at the ports as it was her maiden voyage to that part of the world.

I was thrilled to be leaving London in February and heading towards an exotic South American destination. I had arranged this holiday for myself and two friends, (one of whom I had met on QE2 in 1992 in my 20's) and we were to be sharing a "hull balcony" cabin. We arrived in New York late afternoon to freezing and windy weather, boarding the ship the following day after spending a night in the JFK Holiday Inn (avoid if possible, service appallingly slow at breakfast and hotel itself tired and run down). The ship looked splendid with ice jewels hanging down from every ledge. It was my third time on QM2 (previously the Maiden Voyage and a separate Caribbean cruise) and I have always been pleased with the style, service and ambience afforded by the ship and her crew. We sailed from New York on a clear crisp day and headed at full speed to collect passengers from Fort Lauderdale, so the weather quickly warmed up. Dinner the first night out was a splendid affair as we slowly became acqainted with our other nine dining companions. I have never been disappointed with the food on Cunard ships, consistency and quality can be relied upon. Whilst leaving Fort Lauderdale one of the 4 ships propellers struck a rock and we were forced to turn back whilst investigations were carried out. We left the following evening but were not able to call into scheduled stops of St. Kitts, St. Thomas or Salvador de Bahia but instead went direct to Rio de Janeiro for a sea passage of nine days non-stop. I was concerned about how one of my guests would feel about being "trapped" on a ship for 9 days but he was delighted ! So much to do and so many people to meet. Some passengers were very disappoined, but the reason for going on a cruise is really to enjoy the ship and this ship is very much to be enjoyed. Our cabin, a standard balcony with twin beds and a sofa bed was quite crampt for three adults, a great pity with these new ships is that no single berths are available and the single supplement often makes the trip unaffordable. We were pleased to be offered a 50% refund due to the change in itinery, but this was later increased to 100% which also included our additional 3 day stopover in Rio so we were absolutely thrilled - well done Cunard !
