This was a 14 day cruise around Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sardinia, France & Gibralta in Sept-Oct 2009. The ship was huge with a wide choice of utilities and activities and the crew worked really hard to keep everyone happy, generally with great success. The sailing was smooth and trouble free..the cabin (balcony type) was larger than some and v. clean..the service and food was faultless..good choice of excursions, although possibly a bit pricey..we viewed the many activities available, but didnt have time to try them all, so a bit spoilt for choice here..plenty of relaxation areas and lounge bars, every type you could think of including a trad. English pub...overall the whole experience was good (with the exception of the 'art' auctions, which were v. thinly disguised exploitation of a captive audience and tacky in the extreme!) The downside was that the population onboard was just too large, particularly when the main thoroughfares were being used as the 'entertainment' arena. At these times throngs of people were blocking the stairs and deck areas making progress from one place to another not just difficult, but dangerous. Large numbers of mobility scooters and wheelchairs added to this problem...not the users fault, they wanted to be 'entertained' like everyone else, but I question the sanity of the descision to use these gangways as the place to put on an evening 'show'. There are theatre and gala areas, with seating (and a much more safely structured entry and exit route), so why not stick to using these? I found the organised evening entertainment was very variable, a couple of excellent shows from visiting groups and performers, but generally well below the standard of other cruise lines, particularly from the in-house entertainment director who put on a rather offensive 'comedy' (not!) show one evening, and whose other offerings were largely centred on taking the rise out of volunteers from the audience...not clever, but there were people prepared to volunteer, so I guess it must be fun for some. However if you appreciate formal black tie evenings, sophistication and elegant dancing, be warned, its in short supply on this ship.

We travelled for 14 days and could easily have stayed longer. A different port almost every day. Food AMAZING. Staff were very attentive. Medical facility first class. Live music (Rock the Boat) was excellent although some of the performances in the Alhambra Theatre was average. The kids loved it. Cruising again for us is a must!!

Staff were excellent and friendly. The ship was big and at times did feel overcrowded, especially on the days at sea. The catering was everything that you would expect although I did feel that the drinks were very over priced. IT services on board were poor (slow) and at $0.5 per minute I would expect a better quality of service. The Gym and Spa facilities were the best I have seen. The pool area is exceptional and the wave rider a must!!

WOW! the second i stepped on the ship i was completed amazed by the sheer size of the 'Independence'. I was lucky enough to be invited onboard for an overnight visit and as soon as we got onboard i felt like a child again and wanted to run round and explore everything, so that's exactly what we did. First stop was our cabin, we had an inside cabin on deck 7 which was surprisingly spacious and had everything we needed, we also had a connecting door which was brilliant as our friends were in the cabin next to us so we had it opened up, i can see why families would make full use of the inter-connecting door it really opened up the room and would be perfect to keep an eye on the children. After settling into our cabin we went to have some lunch in the windjammer and there was so much to choose from, the choice was fantastic and they had enough food for everyone. Once we had eaten we went onto explore the ship, and where to start? The cabins sounded like a good place to start and so we went onto look at the suites, which again were amazing the owners and royal suite were huge, the royal suite even had it's own hot tub on the balcony and a baby grand piano inside. My favourite cabin was the promenade cabin which overlooks the royal promenade, and if your lucky enough to get one of these cabins above the Ben and Jerry's ice cream bar you will receive free ice cream for the entire cruise (sorry i don't know the cabin number) these cabins are great as although they are insides you have a window which looks onto the royal promenade, the only downfall is that people can see into your cabin if you don't close the curtains. We then went onto to look at all the public areas and there was so much to look at we didn't think we'd have time to see everything! We started inside with the smaller restaurants the chops grille and Portofino which are both specialty restaurants you will pay a cover charge to dine in here but it is worth it as they are beautiful and very intimate so perfect for a special occasion. Next came the bars which again there were plenty to chose from, whatever you want to drink they have catered for it all. The small bars like the champagne bar and boleros are fantastic to start your evening and then you can move on to the more fun bars like the Karaoke bar where in the evening you can get up on stage and sing along to your favourite tunes, whilst during the day they have 2 karaoke booths were you can record your own karaoke dvd, brilliant fun! We then went onto to look at the ice skating rink and whilst it wasn't as big as i first expected it was still pretty impressive, and the show in the evening was brilliant. There is so much choice of evening entertainment but if you enjoy watching broadway style shows the theatre is the place to be. The 'labyrinth' nightclub is great if you like to dance the night away, it is decorated in a medieval gothic theme which looks great and you can party til late in here, or sit and people watch in one of the intimate booths. If you like a bit of a flutter then the casino is the place to be,it is huge and has loads of slot machines as well as plenty of gaming tables, but be careful you could end up spending a fortune in here! The viking crown lounge is also a great night spot, although a quieter bar it has fantastic views out to sea and over the top of the ship. As if that isn't enough to do in the evening you can also spend the night on he royal promenade where they hold things like 70's nights or you can just have a nice drink in the ole english pub 'the do and badger'. Once we had explored everything the ship had to offer in the evening we went out to check out the healthier side of the ship, the gym and spa where you will find a hair and beauty salon as well as lots of different treatment rooms where you can enjoy a relaxing treatment, in the gym there is everything from workout classes to spinning bikes and also a full size boxing ring with extra large boxing gloves, brilliant fun! Next stop was the outside of the ship and the pool areas, my favourie pool has to be the 'H2O zone' which is full of colourful sprinklers and is excellent for small children. The solarium has an adult only whirlpool which overhangs the side of the ship, a bit scary if you don't like heights but very relaxing. There are also 2 main pools which are surrounded by plenty of sunloungers. For the active fun lovers you will find plenty to do, like the huge rock climbing wall or the full size basketball court, my favourite was the 'Flow rider'surf machine at the back of the ship, this is fantastic fun! There is also a miniture golf course and golf simulator for golf enthuasiasts. The kids clubs and vidoe arcade will keep the kids entertained for hours and they are fully supervised so you will have peace of mind knowing they are safe. In fact there is so much for kids to do i don't think you will ever see them! Overall this ship is fantastic and i can't wait to get back on board!!

What a ship! I was lucky enough to be on board overnight. We had an inside cabin on deck 7. The cabins are spacious with plenty of room. Lots of wardrobe space. The bathroom was a good size. Cabins are very tastefully decorated in natural colours. We then made our way to deck 15 to visit the the Sky chapel, this was very pretty, simple and elegant. The light just poured in. Then on to Olive or twist bar for a quick refreshment. Deck 13 with the flow rider, basketball court, rock climbing wall and crazy golf. The children's area was amazing there is so much for them to do. Each area is set out well keeping the youngsters in there own areas. The arcade for the older children was unreal they had so many different games and activities going on. The gym is very well equip with modern machines. The H2O zone was just fantastic. We then made our way to the Windjammer cafe, This is no cafe! Food was everywhere you looked the choice phenomenal I had to try a bit of everything and it was all so delicious! My favourite has to be the royal promenade with shops, bars, coffee shops, pizza place and Ben & Jerry's ice cream. The promenade was so lively and so much going on and the bridge that changed colour which i did have to walk over every time i went near it! The on air club with the karaoke booths was great, we did sing a few songs in there for a while. We had a glass of Champagne in the Champagne lounge before getting dressed for dinner. We had the early dinning in Romeo & Juliet. The food was to die for. I had lobster bisque, roasted duck and grand mariner souffle. The waiters and staff where wonderful they couldn't do enough to help and to make sure we were happy with everything. We then went up to the sky bar for a few cocktails, before making our way down to the ice rink to watch a show, which was unreal so well choreographed the lighting, music and the skating. After the show we went on to the labyrinth night club for a dance. Before bed we had a quick slice of pizza and then off to bed we went. The beds were so comfy we both drooped off to sleep in minutes. In the morning we had breakfast in the windjammer cafe, again the choice was fantastic. I did find all the staff to be very friendly and polite. I would recommend this ship to everyone young, old, families and singles. There is something for everyone, what ever your taste, they have thought of every thing! I have to say so far this is the best ship I have ever been on, I loved everything about it and can't wait to get back on board!

I was recently lucky enough to be invited onboard the Independence of the Seas to join in the inaugural celebrations. On arrival in Southampton docks I was of course expecting the worlds largest cruise ship to be pretty impressive, but I was actually surprised at the length more than the sheer size of the ship. We boarded quickly and were directed to our cabin, an ocean view on deck 3, where we would be spending the night. I found the cabin to be comfortable, fairly spacious, with everything you would expect from Royal Caribbean, including a flat screen TV, hair dryer and tea and coffee making facilties. We quickly dropped off our baggage, and went off to explore the ship. Where to start? I would struggle to navigate around the ship myself, good job I was with others who had a better sense of direction than me! We soon found the Royal Promenade which is a spectacular, colourful walkway through the middle of the ship overlooked by cabins. The Promenade is lined with shops, as well as a Ben and Jerry

I was lucky enough to go on an overnight visit on the new Royal Caribbean ship Independance of the seas, it was out of this world! as soon as we pulled into port it took my breath away it is huge sitting in port, as soon as i stepped on the ship i felt like a big kid again and just wanted to run around on the ship, it is bright and colourful and very fun, i really liked the abstruct art that is around the ship. the first thing we did was go to our cabins to put our suitcases in, I had an inside cabin on deck 7 these are nice, cosy and stylish. I was keen to see everything so we hung our dresses up and quickly left, first of all we went to the windjammer for lunch, it was amazing ive never seen so much food in one place, you could choose from pizza's burger's salads, sandwiches mash potato curry anything you can think of was in the windjammer, this is buffet service and we piled our plates high. The deserts were devine lots of cakes, and ice creams, with our bellies full we proceeded to look around the ship taking in the cabins first, these were all of good size and the balconys were nice sizes too, the Royal suite was amazing you need never leave your cabin with your own bar, piano, dining table, hottub on the balcony, table and chairs and sunloungers it was huge, the family ocean view cabins were of good size and the general outside and insides were also good sizes. we walked around the ship looking at the bars there was plenty to choose from i especially enjoyed the karaoke bar there are 2 booths where you choose a song and can sing as loud as you like in here and you have the oppurtunity to buy the dvd of yourself singing this was very fun. The casino is huge with plenty of slot machines and tables biggest ive ever seen on a ship, this is the same for the gym, it was actually bigger than my local gym! it had a full size boxing ring and hundreds of weights and exercise machines. We ventured outside to see the swimming pools and activities, the H20 zone for the kids is brilliant really bright and colourful and looked very fun, the rock climbing wall was really high and the flow rider looked really fun this is an eye catching feature of this ship, there is a mini golf course on board along side a jogging track and inline skating track for the dare devils out there. We went to the ice skating rink and watched people practicing for the evenings show, this was a nice size rink not as big as i thought it would be but big enough to fit a fair amount of people on it, there is also a theatre which show comedians and broadway shows. In the evening we went down to dinner and ate in the formal romeo and juliet dining room which was stunning with beautiful chandaliers hanging from the ceilings, we had a 3 course meal which was devine! and the staff were so helpful and always topping our glasses up, they were also very funny with really good sense of humours. It is really easy to find your way around the ship i was worried about getting lost but in every lift there is lists of what you will find on each floor which was very handy, after dinner we headed onto the promenade which has a great selection of shops and bars this is fabulous and very colourful and has lots of choice, we especially liked the ben and jerry's cafe, the coffee shop and the slice of pie pizza shop along here. After the promanade we made our way to the labyrinth which is a small nightclub in the evening and a nice bar, they played up to date music and fun cheesey music so something for everyone, it is decked out like medieval and gothic with beefeater statues, ravens and medieval chairs this was a dark, classy bar. In the morning we were out of our cabin at 7.30 am before breakfast finished at 8am and there was again an amazing choice of food from pancakes, doughnuts, cooked breakfast, cereal, fruit etc, this set me up for the day. All in all i had a fabulous time and didnt want to come off, i would definatley recommend this ship to everyone! and i cant wait to go on here again, definatley for longer next time.
